The fighting between the United States and Spain started because Napoleons decision to sell Louisiana to both parties and there for neither help secure in owning only half the area. They fought each other for over a hundred years after. Some of the biggest battles occurred in the East coast state of Florida which was owned by Spain but connected to the States by land. This land was essential to controlling who had access to the Caribbean. The States fought hard for this small fraction of land forcing Spanish troops down to the tip and the keys. One of the most treasured documents we have is for September 27th 1850, the headline form the Spanish newspaper El Párgio "The Bird". This paper reported the conflict at lake Okeechobee. The article continues to say that the fighting is brutal in the surrounding swampy areas.
